By using kumbukumbu.app, app.kumbukumbu.app or an interview link we send you, you agree to these terms. They follow the QuestionPunk terms at questionpunk.com/legal, which apply where these are silent. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.
What the service is
Kumbukumbu records one person's life story by voice. An AI interviewer asks questions, follows up on the answers, and produces an audio recording and a transcript in the language spoken. You buy it for a family member; they take part by opening a link on a phone. Nothing is installed and they create no account.
Who can use it
You must be 18 or older to buy. The service is for families recording their own relatives; it is not for commercial interviewing.
The free trial
You may try a short interview on yourself at no charge. Trial recordings are used to run the trial and are not a purchase; they carry no promise of delivery.
What $5 buys
- One person recorded: the whole interview, however long it runs and in as many sittings as they like. The link picks up where they stopped.
- Their audio, downloadable and yours; every word transcribed; any language on our list at the time of setup.
- One payment, no subscription. Recording a second person is a second purchase.
We send the interview link within a day of payment, once you have told us who to record and in which language. Payment is taken by Stripe in US dollars; your bank may show it in your local currency.
Refunds
If the first recording does not move you, tell us and we refund the $5. We will always refund a purchase we could not deliver.
Consent of the person recorded
You are responsible for making sure the person you record knows they are being recorded, agrees to it, and is an adult able to give that agreement. The storyteller can stop at any time and can ask us directly to delete their recording. Do not use the service to record anyone who has not agreed.
Who owns the recording
The recording and transcript belong to the family: the storyteller and the buyer may keep, copy, share and publish them as they wish. You give us a licence to store, process, transcribe and deliver them, which is what makes the service work. We do not use recordings for advertising, do not sell them, and do not train AI models on them. See the privacy policy.
AI and accuracy
The interviewer and the transcript are produced by AI. Transcripts may contain mistakes, especially with names and places, and the interviewer may occasionally ask an awkward question. Check anything you rely on against the audio. We make no promise that the output is complete or accurate.
Acceptable use
Do not use the service to record someone without their agreement, to harass or deceive anyone, to upload unlawful content, to probe or overload our systems, or to resell it. We may suspend access that breaks these terms.
Our responsibility
The service is provided as it is. To the extent the law allows, our total liability to you for anything arising from the service is limited to the amount you paid us in the month before the claim, and we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
Changes and ending the service
We may change or stop the service, and may update these terms; the date at the top shows the current version. If we stop the service we give buyers a reasonable chance to download their recordings first.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of the State of New York, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Nothing in them takes away consumer rights you have under the law of the country where you live, including Kenya.
